Heavy rain has flooded large parts of Thailand, killing 23 people and affecting about 2.56 million people across the country.

The numbers, reported by ReliefWeb on September 29, cover the whole country. In Bangkok alone, around 329,000 households have been hit. The capital is now on the fourth day of flooding in many districts.

The Thai Red Cross served 8,000 cooked meals in Bangkok on September 28. It distributed food at six locations in the city. Thousands of residents are staying in temporary shelters.

Damage estimates are rising. One early estimate puts losses in Bangkok at around 320 million dollars. Officials warn the number may grow if rain continues.

The floods come from days of heavy rain linked to the monsoon season. Low-lying areas and neighborhoods near rivers and canals are the worst hit.

Authorities are pumping water and checking drainage systems. More rain is forecast this week, so officials have asked people in flood-prone areas to stay alert and follow evacuation advice.
