Sydney man charged over allegedly stranding woman in Pakistan

A Sydney man has appeared in court charged with exit trafficking after allegedly stranding a woman in Pakistan. The 35-year-old appeared before the Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday. The Australian Federal Police said the man allegedly deceived a woman known to him into leaving Australia on the pretense of a holiday to Pakistan in early 2026. He allegedly took possession of her passport and identification documents before the trip. Once in Pakistan, the man allegedly bought a one-way return ticket to Australia for himself without telling the woman. A few days later, she was told she would stay in Pakistan permanently while he returned home. Her passport and documents were allegedly withheld, preventing her return. AFP officers executed a search warrant at a Western Sydney home on September 16, seizing electronic devices, an airline ticket and identification documents. The man was charged with one count of facilitating the exit of another person by threat, deception or coercion. The offence carries up to 12 years in jail. He was granted conditional bail.
