Russia hits Ukraine energy grid; 7 killed, Kyiv faces blackouts

Russia launched one of its largest strikes of the war against Ukraine's energy infrastructure on September 30, killing at least seven people.
Missiles and drones hit power facilities across the country. Emergency blackouts were imposed in Kyiv and three other regions as grid operators scrambled to stabilise the network.
Ukrainian officials said air defences intercepted many of the incoming weapons, but several strikes got through. Repair crews worked through the night.
The attack came as Ukraine heads into the heating season. Officials warned that repeated strikes could leave millions without reliable power in winter.
Russia has targeted Ukraine's energy grid in waves since 2022. Kyiv says each wave is timed to maximise civilian suffering as temperatures fall.
Western allies condemned the strike. Ukraine's energy ministry said it was coordinating with European partners on equipment and repair support.
Grid operator Ukrenergo said repair crews were working around the clock to restore supply. Officials urged residents to limit electricity use during evening peak hours to ease pressure on the damaged network.
