Russia struck the headquarters of Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest mobile operator, on Sunday as part of a wider campaign against the country’s communications infrastructure.

Kyivstar told local media its head office in Kyiv was hit, but there were no casualties. Russia’s defence ministry also said it hit a data centre belonging to Vodafone Ukraine, the country’s second-largest mobile network.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia struck a data centre in Kyiv twice on Sunday morning, wounding two children and an adult.

Over the past week, Russian strikes have also hit data centres of Ukrainian internet providers, cutting service to about 100,000 households in Kyiv and the surrounding region, according to Ukraine’s digital ministry.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia was targeting data centres to disrupt the flow of information, adding that rapid alerts about missile threats save lives. Why it matters: knocking out communications can cripple the air-raid warning systems that civilians rely on.
