Rubio reassures Iceland on Arctic as NATO tour begins

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio began a four-day tour of NATO allies on October 5, starting in Iceland.
Rubio met Iceland’s Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir in Reykjavik at Hofdi House, the site of the 1986 Reagan-Gorbachev summit.
He sought to reassure the ally that the Trump administration has no designs on Iceland. He called the country a ‘critical outpost’ for monitoring the North Atlantic.
Rubio said the United States would act only with Iceland’s consent. He stressed the protection of undersea cables and Arctic lines of communication.
The tour also covers Athens, for the sixth US-Greece Strategic Dialogue on defence and energy, and Lisbon, for defence and technology cooperation.
The trip follows a late-September US-Denmark security pact on Greenland. It comes amid rising Russian and Chinese activity in the High North.
