A newly obtained internal prosecution document lists Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban among four former senior officials whose involvement in the detention of Ukrainian cash couriers should be clarified, according to reporting by the outlet 444. Prosecutors did not deny the document’s authenticity.

The case dates to March 5, when Hungary seized $40 million and 35 million euros in cash plus 9 kilograms of gold from seven employees of Ukraine’s Oschadbank traveling in two armored cars from Austria toward Ukraine. Orban’s decree 49/2026 ordered a 60-day hold on the money.

The money-laundering probe into the couriers was later closed after investigators found no evidence of crime in the money’s origin. But a separate investigation continues into the couriers’ detention. Former Counter Terrorism Centre chief Janos Hajdu was questioned as a suspect in June over the alleged unlawful detention of the couriers, who were handcuffed and blindfolded.

The report alleges Orban’s government legalized the seizure of the Ukrainian bank’s money and gold. Hungarian authorities have not publicly responded in detail to the document’s claims, and the detention investigation is ongoing.
