World marks International Day of Older Persons today

The world observes the International Day of Older Persons on October 1, with this year’s theme “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives”.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in his message that longer lives are one of humanity’s greatest achievements, noting that the global population aged 60 and over will nearly double from 1.2 billion to 2.1 billion by 2050.
The UN’s Decade of Healthy Ageing runs through 2030, urging countries to build age-friendly health systems, fight ageism and ensure social protection for older people.
India’s HelpAge India marked the day with its #GenerationsTogether campaign, bringing young and old people together for health camps and awareness events across cities.
Activists used the occasion to demand better pensions, accessible public transport and dedicated geriatric care, pointing out that older women are especially vulnerable. With populations ageing worldwide, policymakers say rethinking work, healthcare and community life for longer lives is no longer optional but urgent.
