Nobel Prize week begins with GLP-1 research among contenders

The 2026 Nobel Prize announcements will take place from October 5 to October 12, with all events streamed live by the Nobel Prize’s official channels.

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet will announce the medicine prize first, on Monday October 5 at 11:30 CEST. Physics follows on October 6, chemistry on October 7, literature on October 8 and the peace prize on October 9.

The economics prize closes the week on Monday October 12. The peace prize is announced in Oslo; the others are announced in Stockholm.

Research on GLP-1 therapies for diabetes and obesity is among the possible contenders for the medicine prize. Other names in predictions include optogenetics and optical coherence tomography.

This year’s laureates will receive SEK 12 million, about 1.06 million euros. The prize money was raised from 2026.

The announcements often spark wide public debate about which discoveries deserve the world’s most famous science honours.

Last year’s prizes set the tone for this week’s picks. The full list of laureates will be known by October 12.
