At least 13 people have died and 10 were injured after heavy monsoon rain triggered floods and landslides across Nepal. The deaths were reported on Monday, September 29.

The worst-hit districts are Ilam, Panchthar, Taplejung and Jhapa in the country’s east. Swollen rivers swept away homes, roads and bridges, cutting off several villages.

Nepal’s weather office said 17 rivers have crossed the danger mark. Sixteen highway routes are blocked, and rescue teams are struggling to reach isolated areas.

The Nepal Army used helicopters to rescue 16 people trapped by floodwaters. Local authorities have moved families from low-lying areas to schools and community halls.

Officials warned of more rain in the next 24 hours and asked people living near rivers to stay alert. Nepal loses hundreds of lives to monsoon disasters every year, and this season’s toll continues to climb.

Nepal’s monsoon season runs from June to September and brings most of the country’s annual rainfall. Steep terrain and fragile slopes make landslides common, and disaster officials say early warnings save lives each year.
