Nepal ends search-and-rescue phase of August flood disaster

Nepal has ended the search-and-rescue operation for those still missing after the devastating August 26 flood, officials said on Monday, moving to a rehabilitation phase.
At least 1,455 people were killed and 5,285 remain missing after the flood, which originated at Nepal’s border with China’s Tibet region. Another 13,795 people were rescued.
“We are moving from the search and rescue phase to the search and rehabilitation phase,” Phanindra Paudel, chief of the National Emergency Operation Centre, told Reuters. Authorities are working on legally declaring the missing dead so families can complete insurance and banking formalities.
The flood destroyed 12 hydroelectric projects, roads, bridges, farms and settlements. Nepal has said it needs nearly $5 billion for early recovery, and has sought a reconstruction budget of NPR 559.17 billion.
Forty days had passed since the floods devastated the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors. The disaster was likely caused by a glacier slope failure in Langtang National Park. Its energy equalled a 5.2-magnitude earthquake.
