NATO’s top general urges public naming of Russian sabotage

NATO’s top military commander has urged European lawmakers to publicly attribute acts of sabotage to Russia and to step up support for Ukraine, amid a wave of hybrid attacks across the continent.

Supreme Allied Commander Europe Alexus Grynkewich told EU lawmakers on Sunday that naming the perpetrators openly would strengthen deterrence. His remarks followed a drone attack in Leipzig and a train strike near the Polish border, both under investigation.

NATO launched the Eastern Sentry mission on September 11 to protect critical infrastructure along the alliance’s eastern flank. Separately, Russia on Tuesday issued a nuclear warning to NATO over Kaliningrad, raising tensions further.

European intelligence agencies have reported a sharp rise in sabotage, cyberattacks and arson linked to Moscow since 2022. Grynkewich said Ukraine’s defence remained central to European security and called for sustained military aid. The general also warned that hybrid attacks were likely to intensify through the winter, when energy infrastructure becomes a more tempting target. He urged member states to share intelligence faster and to harden undersea cables, rail links and power grids that have repeatedly been singled out by hostile actors.
