Russian Drone Strikes Shut Kyiv Bridges; 1 Killed, 2 Injured

Russian drone strikes on October 2 forced the closure of key bridges across the Dnipro river in Kyiv, disrupting the Ukrainian capital.

The Southern Bridge was closed in both directions, the Paton Bridge was shut, and traffic on the Metro Bridge was restricted. The strikes killed one person and injured two others.

The attacks are part of Russia's sustained campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure. Kyiv's bridges are critical for civilian movement and military logistics.

In a separate strike, a guided-bomb attack on Kharkiv killed two people and wounded 28, local officials said.

Ukraine's air defences intercepted many of the drones, but some got through. Debris from intercepted drones also caused damage in residential areas.

The strikes come as both sides continue to trade long-range attacks. Ukraine has stepped up its own drone strikes on Russian targets in recent months.

Kyiv residents faced long detours as authorities worked to assess bridge damage. Officials said they would reopen the crossings as soon as safety checks were complete.

The war is now well into its fifth year, with no ceasefire in sight despite periodic diplomatic efforts.
