Kenya Reports First Imported Ebola Case; Patient Dies

Kenya has confirmed its first imported case of Ebola, and the patient has died. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale confirmed the case on October 6.
The patient was a Kenyan citizen who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo for about seven years. He fell ill roughly a month ago and travelled by road to Kampala.
He then flew to Nairobi on JamboJet flight 8523 on October 3. He was isolated at the Nairobi Hospital, where he died on Monday night.
Health officials have traced 28 contacts, plus 23 passengers and four crew members from the flight. So far, Kenya has screened 652,584 travellers, tested 267 samples, and found just one positive.
The World Health Organization says the outbreak is outpacing responders, with 8,000 infected and 4,000 dead in the DRC. No approved vaccines exist for the Bundibugyo strain involved.
Officials said the flight’s other passengers have been asked to monitor their health for 21 days. Kenya’s health ministry has set up screening desks at all major entry points.
