Israel has revoked the diplomatic status of Dutch diplomats at the Netherlands mission in Israel. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced the move on Saturday.

The decision is a response to the Netherlands enforcing a ban on the import and sale of goods from Israeli settlements. The ban covers settlements in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights.

Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen called the move unnecessary. He said the Netherlands regrets the decision and is weighing a response. He added that the sanctions were not aimed at Israel’s security.

Earlier this month, Israel ordered the closure of the British Consulate in East Jerusalem. That came after London announced a similar ban on settlement goods.

The dispute adds to the strain between Israel and European capitals over settlement policy. The Netherlands is one of several EU states tightening trade rules on settlement products.

The Dutch ban took effect after a court ruling in The Hague. Israeli officials said the ban singles out Israel unfairly. The EU is split on how far trade curbs should go.
