India, Germany Deepen Defence Ties in Delhi Meet

India and Germany moved to deepen military ties. Chief of Defence Staff General N S Raja Subramani met his German counterpart General Carsten Breuer in New Delhi on October 6.

The two sides reaffirmed what they called an enduring defence partnership. They discussed military cooperation and strategic and technological engagements. The meeting built on the September phone call between Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz.

A proposed submarine deal is a key item. Germany’s Ambassador Jasper Wieck said the deal is effectively finalised from the German side. It now rests with India to decide.

The talks come as the two countries mark 75 years of diplomatic relations. Defence trade and joint technology projects are expected to grow. Both sides see the partnership as central to stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Defence analysts see the submarine project as the centrepiece of the growing partnership. Both capitals want technology transfer, not just equipment sales, to anchor the relationship for decades.
