Rescuers in Nepal have recovered two more bodies from an avalanche on Mount Himlung, raising the death toll to four, with 12 people still missing.

The Nepal National Mountain Guide Association said its teams found the bodies on Monday while digging through snow that had buried tents at base camp. Two more victims were recovered on Sunday.

Ten people were rescued by helicopter. All those killed, missing or rescued are Nepali nationals. They were at base camp preparing for foreign clients ahead of the autumn climbing season, which began this month.

The avalanche hit Mount Himlung, a 7,126-metre peak in the Manang district, on Sunday during severe weather. Heavy rain also caused flooding and landslides in the area over the weekend.

The bodies were airlifted to Kathmandu and taken to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. Family members gathered at the morgue but did not speak to reporters.

Nepal’s disaster agency said 21 other people were killed and five more are missing in separate incidents across the country between Thursday and Sunday.
