Germany’s Foreign Minister Visits ICC, Pledges Full Support

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul visited the International Criminal Court in The Hague on Monday in a high-profile show of support for the tribunal, which US President Donald Trump has called a rogue institution.

“The German government completely supports the court,” Wadephul said before the visit, adding that Berlin was working with other states to keep the court functional. He described backing the ICC as part of Germany’s historic responsibility, pointing to the Nazi era when the judiciary was controlled by the regime.

The Trump administration has sanctioned 13 ICC staff members, including key prosecutors and nine judges, among them the court’s Japanese president Tomoko Akane. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has launched what he called a sweeping campaign to dismantle the court.

Dutch officials have been warned that sanctions on the entire court are imminent. They are examining ways to help the tribunal keep operating, including paying staff, protecting witnesses and running the detention facility.

One option being discussed is the EU’s blocking statute, which could stop European companies from complying with the US measures. The court has 125 member states.
