G7 agrees 100-million-barrel oil release to cool fuel prices

Group of Seven leaders have agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude oil and fuel products from emergency reserves in a coordinated push to ease soaring energy prices.
The four-month release, coordinated through the International Energy Agency, will begin immediately, with a large amount of diesel entering the market in the first 20 days. The decision came at a virtual meeting on October 2 chaired by French president Emmanuel Macron.
The move follows pressure from United States president Donald Trump, who pressed Europe to draw down emergency stocks and had floated restrictions on American diesel exports. The G7 also pledged not to restrict energy exports among member countries.
Markets reacted at once. Brent crude fell about 3 dollars to below 100 dollars a barrel, and diesel’s premium over crude narrowed. United States diesel prices had touched a record 6.50 dollars a gallon.
Officials say the release buys time. It puts physical fuel into a tight market, but it does not add refinery capacity, and the IEA will review whether more is needed.
