Quarter Million Join School Protests Across France

About 266,000 people took to the streets across France on October 6 in protests over school conditions, with 56,000 marching in Paris alone.

The demonstrations turned tense in several cities. Police used tear gas to disperse crowds, and around 500 people were detained, officials said.

Students, teachers and parents joined the rallies, demanding better funding, smaller classes and improved school infrastructure. Unions accused the government of neglecting public education.

The interior ministry said most protests were peaceful but clashes broke out in Paris and a few other cities. Images showed barricades and running confrontations between police and masked youths.

The government has promised dialogue with unions but defended its education record. Opposition leaders blamed the unrest on years of underinvestment.

Further action is planned if demands are not met. Unions say a national strike could follow in the coming weeks.

Education unions have called the turnout a warning to the government. They want urgent talks on pay, staffing and school repairs before the winter term.
