London: Counter-terror police are investigating a major incident near RAF Fairford after five men were arrested early on Sunday, September 27.

Gloucestershire Police received a call at about 00:45 BST reporting three suspicious vehicles travelling towards the RAF base, which is used by the United States Air Force. Armed officers arrested five men in the nearby village of Whelford on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act.

The men were later further arrested on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act, according to the Metropolitan Police. Counter Terrorism Policing is leading the investigation and the five remain in custody.

Police set up a 400-metre cordon around the vehicles, and the Army’s explosive ordnance disposal unit is examining them. About 85 homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans said the investigation is in its early stages. Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone said police were working to return residents to their homes as quickly as possible.

The prime minister called the incident deeply concerning and urged the public not to speculate.
