Former German spy chief August Hanning has been arrested on suspicion of treason and espionage in one of the biggest intelligence scandals to hit Germany's foreign intelligence service in decades.Hanning, 80, led the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND) from 1998 to 2005. Germany's federal prosecutor said he is strongly suspected of treasonous espionage, spying out state secrets, attempted treason and acting as an intelligence agent for a foreign power.Prosecutors say Hanning paid his former chief of staff, identified only as Manfred D, for as many as 2,000 classified documents after his tenure ended. The two men allegedly agreed the arrangement in spring 2010. The most recent documents were supplied in June 2022.Manfred D was arrested the same day and faces charges of aiding and abetting treason. He appeared before the Federal Court of Justice on Tuesday and was ordered into pretrial detention. Prosecutors have not named the foreign intelligence service Hanning allegedly served, though German media reported it was not Russia.
