The European Union may delay its methane emissions rules on gas imports by a year, as the bloc balances climate goals against energy security needs.

The rules, in force since August 2025, phase in over time. From 2027, importers must prove their gas stays below a methane-intensity limit or face penalties. The EU had also planned to phase out Russian LNG by the end of 2026.

Officials are now considering a one-year delay amid concerns about supply and prices. The United States supplied 46 per cent of the EU’s LNG imports in the first half of 2026, and some US producers have warned the methane standards could disrupt flows.

The EU also pledged to buy 750 billion dollars of American energy under its trade deal with Washington, adding pressure to keep gas flowing. Environmental groups oppose any delay, saying methane is a potent greenhouse gas. A decision is expected in the coming months as the 2027 deadline approaches.
