Estonia accuses Russia of arson attack on defence firm

Estonia has blamed Russia for an arson attack on a defence company that supplies military vehicles to Ukraine.
Estonian authorities said on Tuesday that the fire at a Tallinn building used by Milrem Robotics was sabotage commissioned by Russian security services. The Internal Security Service said the attack was deliberate and pre-planned, and directly attributable to Russia.
The fire broke out overnight on August 15 at a building in the Lasnamae district used by Milrem Robotics, the maker of THeMIS unmanned ground vehicles supplied to Ukraine. Two Latvian suspects were detained in Latvia on August 17, and a third the next day. All three were handed over to Estonia.
Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said such actions were absolutely unacceptable and summoned Russia’s charge d’affaires in Tallinn.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the claims as unfounded and without substantiation.
Moscow has been widely accused by Western officials of running a sabotage campaign across Europe to undermine support for Ukraine. The Associated Press has tracked around 200 such incidents since February 2022.
Why it matters: the finding raises pressure on Europe to respond to what Estonia calls a broader Russian hybrid campaign.
