Brazil elects third transgender person to national Congress

Brazil has elected its third transgender person to the national Congress, the Advocate, Attitude magazine and the Washington Blade reported.
The new lawmaker is also the first transgender woman from Brazil’s northeast region to enter Congress. She will serve in the Chamber of Deputies.
The result adds to a small but growing group of transgender lawmakers in the country. Two transgender women were elected to Congress in 2022, marking a historic first.
Brazil has seen increasing LGBTQ representation in politics in recent years, even as the community faces high levels of violence.
Supporters say the win is a step forward for trans rights in Brazil. The country has one of the largest LGBTQ populations in Latin America.
The new congressional term begins next year. Advocates hope the new voice in Congress will push for stronger protections for transgender Brazilians.
Brazil’s Congress has over 500 members in the Chamber of Deputies. LGBTQ groups say visibility in politics helps fight discrimination.
