Brazil votes today: Lula leads Flavio Bolsonaro in final polls

Brazilians vote on Sunday in the first round of the presidential election, with final polls showing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva slightly ahead of Senator Flavio Bolsonaro. A runoff on October 25 looks likely. Under Brazil’s system, a candidate must win more than 50 per cent of valid votes, which exclude blank and null ballots, to win outright. If nobody crosses that line, the top two face off in the second round. A CNT/MDA poll put Lula at 47.8 per cent of valid votes against Bolsonaro’s 42.1 per cent, in a survey of 2,007 people with a margin of error of 2.2 points. Datafolha gave Lula 45 per cent and Bolsonaro 42 per cent in a survey of 4,006 people on October 2 and 3. The Quaest poll showed the tightest race: Lula 46 per cent, Bolsonaro 45 per cent. An AtlasIntel survey had Lula at 47 per cent and Bolsonaro at 44.1 per cent. Runoff projections differ: CNT/MDA gives Lula 47.3 to Bolsonaro’s 43.1, while Quaest projects Bolsonaro ahead 44 to 42. The leftist incumbent faces the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Campaigning ended on Saturday with both leaders holding rallies and expressing confidence.
