Belgium’s top threat analyst says Iran was behind attacks on Jewish sites in the country earlier this year. Gert Vercauteren, head of the Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis, spoke to public broadcaster RTBF.

Vercauteren said those behind a bomb attack on a synagogue in Liege and the torching of a car in Antwerp “certainly followed Iran’s call to strike Jewish and Israeli interests everywhere in the world.” No one was hurt in either attack.

The explosive device went off outside the Synagogue de Liege shortly before 4 a.m. on March 9. That same week, a car was torched in Antwerp’s Jewish quarter.

Vercauteren said the attacks were part of a coordinated effort, not isolated cases. He said a person later arrested in Turkey was leading the coordination of attacks in Europe. Other interventions followed, and no more Iran-inspired attacks have been seen since.

Iran is believed to have stepped up efforts against Jewish and Israeli targets worldwide since the U.S.-Israeli war with Tehran began in late February.
