Australia probes FlyDubai co-pilot’s past after hijack bid

Australian authorities are investigating the background of the FlyDubai co-pilot who tried to seize a passenger jet on Monday. The joint counter-terrorism team in Victoria confirmed it is assisting an international investigation.
The co-pilot is reported to be Omani national Hamam Al-Hammami. He allegedly tried to force open the cockpit door of flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv and redirect the aircraft. A UAE prosecutor has called it a terrorist attack.
Australian agencies confirmed the man arrived on a student visa in 2014. He studied engineering at RMIT University in Melbourne from 2015 to 2017, and his visa was cancelled in 2019.
The aircraft plunged 16,000 feet in about 30 seconds during the struggle, according to flight-tracking data. Crew and passengers restrained the co-pilot, and the plane landed safely.
Australia’s Joint Counter Terrorism Team, which includes the Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police and the domestic spy agency ASIO, said it has no further comment while the matter is active.
