4.9 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Afghanistan

A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan in the early hours of Tuesday, according to the National Center for Seismology. The tremor was recorded at 01:57:24 IST at a depth of 220 kilometres. Its epicentre was located at 36.602 degrees north and 71.084 degrees east in northern Afghanistan.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The great depth of the quake meant its energy was spread over a wide area, which likely limited the shaking at the surface. Deep earthquakes in this region are common because of the collision of tectonic plates under the Hindu Kush mountains.
Tremors were felt in parts of neighbouring countries, but no tsunami warning was issued since the quake occurred far inland. Afghanistan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, and it has suffered several deadly shallow quakes in recent years. Authorities are monitoring the situation for any reports of damage in remote areas.
