World Post Day 2026: Why October 9 Matters for Mail
World Post Day is observed on October 9 every year. The day marks the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874.
This year’s theme is “One postal network, infinite possibilities”. The UPU held its main ceremony in Berne, Switzerland.
The UPU is the second-oldest international organisation in the world. It has 192 member countries. The body sets rules for international mail exchange.
Post Day highlights the role of postal services in daily life. Posts deliver letters, parcels and money orders to millions of people. They also help small businesses reach customers through e-commerce.
In India, India Post runs one of the largest postal networks in the world. It has over 1.5 lakh post offices. Most of them are in rural areas.
The UPU said postal networks must keep adapting to digital change. It called for more investment in parcel logistics. World Post Day reminds us that mail still connects the world.
