US-Iran strike threat: what is happening

Reports say the US military has been ordered to be ready for possible strikes on Iran. Here is what is happening and why it matters.
US media report that President Donald Trump is weighing the timing of possible strikes. Action could come before the November 3 midterm elections. But no decision has been made, and officials stress the plans are not final.
The backdrop is a seven-month simmering conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran. Tensions have stayed high even without open war.
Markets reacted fast. Oil prices jumped more than 3%. European shares fell, and US futures dropped from record highs. Gold rose to about $4,136 an ounce as investors sought safety.
The 10-year US Treasury yield hit about 5.35%, its highest since 2002. Bitcoin fell to around $82,500.
The Fed is also split. Minutes showed officials divided over further rate hikes.
For now, the world is watching Washington. Any strike could widen the Middle East conflict and push energy prices higher.
