US tariffs on India explained: what the 50% duty means

The United States has imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman says trade talks have reached a plateau. Further concessions may be hard, she said.
The tariffs are among the highest the US charges any country. They cover a wide range of Indian exports. Washington has also warned of tariffs up to 100% on big buyers of Russian energy. India is one of the largest buyers of Russian oil.
The tariffs hurt Indian exporters. Textiles, gems, jewellery and engineering goods face higher costs. US buyers may switch to other suppliers.
India has refused to open sensitive farm and dairy sectors. The US wants greater access. New Delhi says its farmers’ interests come first.
Both sides have held several rounds of talks. A deal remains elusive. The standoff affects a trade relationship worth over $130 billion.
Exporters are asking the government for support. New Delhi is exploring other markets. The tariffs could also hit investment flows between the two countries. The next rounds of talks will be watched closely.
