UPI Merchant Fee Explained: What the Jan 2027 Deferral Means for You

A new UPI fee is in the news. Here is what it means in simple terms.
From January 1, 2027, merchants may pay 0.4 percent on UPI payments above 2,000 rupees. The fee was first set for October 15, 2026, but is likely to be delayed.
The charge is called MDR, or merchant discount rate. It is the fee shops pay for accepting digital payments.
You, the customer, will not pay it directly. Your person-to-person transfers stay free. Small payments at shops stay free too.
Only payments above 2,000 rupees to merchants are covered. The shop bears the cost, not you.
Why the fee at all? Banks and apps spend money to run UPI. The fee helps them recover costs.
Small merchants worry customers may return to cash. The final decision rests with the NPCI board.
The change needs system updates. Banks say they need months. That is why January 2027 looks likely.
