Bangkok is battling its fourth day of flooding. Here is what we know so far about the crisis in Thailand.

What happened: Days of heavy monsoon rain have flooded large parts of Thailand. Low-lying districts and areas near rivers and canals are worst hit.

How bad is it: 23 people have died across the country. About 2.56 million people are affected. In Bangkok, around 329,000 households have been hit. Early damage estimates for the capital are around 320 million dollars.

What is the response: The Thai Red Cross served 8,000 cooked meals in Bangkok on September 28, across six locations. Thousands are in temporary shelters. Authorities are pumping water and clearing drains.

Why it matters: Bangkok floods often because it is low-lying and built on soft ground. Heavy rain, high tides and poor drainage combine to trap water in the city.

What next: More rain is forecast this week. Officials have asked people in flood-prone areas to stay alert and follow evacuation advice.
