Talos explained: the AI finding hidden disease diagnoses

Talos is an automated tool that finds missed diagnoses in rare-disease patients by re-reading their existing DNA data. Here is how it works.
When someone has a suspected rare genetic disease, doctors sequence their genome. But more than half get no answer the first time. The data is stored, and science moves on.
Talos, published in Nature Medicine in June 2026, automatically re-examines that stored data. It uses updated knowledge about genes and smarter computer methods to spot disease-causing variants that were missed or misread before.
The results are striking. Standard analysis solved 62 percent of cases. Talos reached 89 percent. In one study of 4,735 people, it found 241 new diagnoses without any new sequencing.
Why does this matter? Manual reanalysis is slow and costly, so few patients get it. Talos is open-source, cheap, and scalable. For millions stuck in years-long diagnostic odysseys, the answer may already sit in their files.
