New Sugar Rules: 1,000-Quintal Limit, 15-Day Holding From Oct 15

The Centre has tightened stockholding rules for sugar dealers ahead of the festive season. Dealers will not be allowed to hold more than 1,000 quintals of sugar at a time, or keep stocks for more than 15 days from the date of receipt.
The revised norms take effect from October 15 and will remain in force until November 30. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution announced the change on Thursday.
Kolkata, its extended metropolitan areas and Assam get a higher ceiling of 2,000 quintals. Kolkata is a major distribution hub for eastern and northeastern India. It sources sugar from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The move comes as the new sugar season began on October 1. Ex-mill prices have fallen by about 28 per cent, while average retail prices are down about 15 per cent from their August peak.
The government wants wholesalers and retailers to pass the lower mill prices on to consumers immediately. The tighter limits aim to stop hoarding and speculative trading.
