Sensex Rally Explained: Should Investors Fear a Rate Hike?

Indian markets are rallying, with the Sensex climbing on strong IT earnings and foreign investor buying. But whispers of a possible rate hike are making some investors nervous. Here is what is really going on.
First, the rally. IT stocks have led the charge after better-than-expected quarterly results, while banking and auto shares joined in. Foreign investors, who sold heavily earlier in the year, have turned buyers again, and domestic mutual fund inflows remain at record highs.
Now the fear. Inflation has ticked up in recent months, raising questions about whether the Reserve Bank of India might pause rate cuts or even hike. Higher rates make borrowing costlier for companies and reduce the appeal of stocks versus bonds.
History offers perspective. Markets have often rallied through rate uncertainty when earnings growth is strong. The RBI has also signalled it will move gradually, watching data rather than surprising investors.
For everyday investors, experts advise calm. Keep your asset allocation, continue SIPs, and avoid trying to time the market around rate decisions. Corrections are normal in a bull market; panic-selling during them is what hurts returns.
