Sensex up 837 points: what drove today’s rally

The Sensex jumped 837 points on Friday to close the afternoon session at 72,430.24. Here is what powered the rally and what it means.
First, the breadth was strong. Trent surged 4.3 per cent, Shriram Finance rose 3.8 per cent, and Power Grid and Jio Financial each gained over 3 per cent. Banking, energy and consumer stocks led the charge.
Second, the Nifty crossed 22,500, rising 1.19 per cent to 22,504.65. When both headline indices rise more than 1 per cent together, it signals broad confidence rather than a narrow, stock-specific move.
Third, there was a notable drag: IT stocks fell after TCS reported its September-quarter results on Thursday. Infosys dropped 1.8 per cent as investors booked profits in technology shares.
So what does a 1.17 per cent single-day gain mean for you? For long-term investors, one strong session changes little. But sustained buying ahead of the festive season suggests optimism about domestic demand.
