RBI Rate Hike Explained: What It Means for You

The Reserve Bank of India is expected to raise its key interest rate on October 7. Most economists expect a 25-basis-point hike to 5.50 percent.
It would be the first rate hike since February 2023. Here is what the decision means and why it matters.
The repo rate is the rate at which the RBI lends to banks. When it rises, banks usually raise loan and deposit rates too.
That means home and personal loan EMIs could go up. New loans become costlier. Existing floating-rate loans get more expensive too.
On the plus side, fixed deposit rates may rise. Savers can earn more on new deposits.
The RBI is acting because inflation is high. Consumer inflation hit 4.82 percent in August. That is the third month above the 4 percent target.
Brent crude prices above $101 a barrel are adding pressure. A weak rupee makes imports costlier.
The RBI committee will weigh growth against price stability. Markets will watch its statement for clues about future moves.
