NVS-03 and NavIC Explained: Why India’s GPS Backup Needs This Launch

ISRO's planned NVS-03 launch in mid-October matters more than most satellite missions. Here is why.
**What is NavIC?** Navigation with Indian Constellation — India's home-grown alternative to America's GPS. It is designed to provide positioning over India and the surrounding region.
**Why does India need it?** Dependence on foreign navigation systems is a strategic risk. In a conflict, access to GPS could be degraded. NavIC gives India an independent fallback.
**What went wrong?** The constellation is meant to have seven satellites. But failures and ageing have left only three usable for positioning — and four are the minimum for a fix. NVS-02 failed in January 2025 after a valve malfunction.
**What is NVS-03?** The replacement satellite, set to launch on GSLV F18 between October 15 and 20. Success would restore the four-satellite geometry needed for reliable navigation.
**What is at stake?** Beyond strategy, NavIC is being pushed for civilian use — in phones, vehicles and timing services. But users will not adopt a system that cannot guarantee a signal.
**What next?** If NVS-03 succeeds, ISRO will likely accelerate follow-on launches to rebuild redundancy.
