Nobel Peace Prize 2026: what we know so far, explained

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize has gone to Navi Pillay. The announcement was made on October 9 in Oslo. Pillay is a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from South Africa.
Her report on Gaza was cited among the reasons for the award. The Nobel committee praised her lifelong work for justice and accountability. She is known for taking strong stands on human rights.
After the announcement, she joked that she “may share this prize with Trump”. US President Donald Trump had been nominated for the prize by Pakistan’s Shehbaz Sharif. Trump has not responded to the remark.
Hours later, the United States imposed sanctions on ICC officials. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the move. The timing surprised many observers. Pillay said she hopes the prize will push leaders toward peace.
The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded since 1901. Last year’s winner was recognised for humanitarian work. The 2026 award ceremony will be held in Oslo in December.
