Nobel Peace Prize 2026: What Trump’s Pitch Means, Explained

The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday. President Trump has made his case for why he should win it.
“I settled eight wars, another one is coming,” Trump said on Wednesday. He claimed no president had done more for peace.
Trump pointed to Gaza hostages being returned. He also noted that Maria Corina Machado, last year’s winner, gave him her medal in January.
But analysts see big problems with his case. The United States is at war with Iran, a conflict Trump started with Israel in February over Tehran’s nuclear programme.
The war has stretched into its eighth month. Experts call it a major strike against his candidacy.
Other names are getting buzz. They include Pope Leo IX, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Russian critic Alexei Navalny.
Some experts say Trump could still have a path in future years. They suggest two actions: end the Russia-Ukraine war and bring peace to the Middle East.
Trump himself seemed to expect a snub. He said the committee has a reputation for not giving the prize “to people like me”.
