UEFA Nations League 2027 format explained: leagues, groups, finals

The UEFA Nations League 2027 is contested by 54 national teams divided into four leagues based on past rankings. Leagues A, B and C have 16 teams each in four groups of four. League D has six teams in two groups of three. It began in September 2026 and ends with the finals in June 2027.
Why is it in the news? England’s 7-0 win over Croatia and Spain’s 10 straight wins have shaped League A. A spitting allegation in Ireland’s 1-1 draw with Israel has drawn a UEFA disciplinary probe.
What is at stake? Teams chase group titles and a top-two finish to reach the quarter-finals in March. Croatia, after its heaviest-ever defeat, face Spain in Split on Tuesday.
Who benefits? The format gives smaller teams meaningful games and a route to major tournaments through play-offs. For big sides, it replaces friendlies with competitive fixtures during international windows.
The 2027 finals take place in June 2027. The league phase runs through November. Check your team’s group before planning around the fixtures.
