Man City charges verdict: what happens next?

An independent commission has found Manchester City guilty of more than 100 breaches of Premier League financial rules, the biggest verdict in English football history. Here is what it means. The charges covered the 2009-10 to 2017-18 seasons. The commission found City used sham commercial contracts in a disguised funding scheme. This inflated the club’s revenue and reduced its costs by more than £900 million, or about $1.19 billion. It also found City failed to cooperate with the investigation. City have appealed, saying the judgment has clear material errors. So nothing is final yet. If the appeal fails, the punishments could be historic. Options include a heavy points deduction, relegation, expulsion from the Premier League or stripped titles. Even the club’s ownership could be forced to change. City lead the Premier League by three points and face Liverpool on Sunday in their first game since the verdict. The case has run for years and will likely run longer through the appeals process.
