Kenya Ebola death explained: what travellers should know

Kenya has recorded its first Ebola case after a traveller from the Democratic Republic of Congo died in Nairobi. The patient tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus.
Ebola spreads through direct contact with body fluids of an infected person. Symptoms include fever, chills, muscle pain, sore throat and bleeding under the skin. The Bundibugyo strain has no licensed vaccine and no approved treatment. Care is supportive.
The case worries health officials because the patient passed airport screening. Kenya’s health chief said medication may have masked his symptoms at the checkpoint. This shows how hard it is to catch the virus at borders.
Kenya has identified 28 contacts and is tracing 23 passengers and four crew from the patient’s flight. Exposed people face up to 21 days of monitoring or quarantine.
The WHO and Africa CDC have sent tests, protective kits and technical teams. Kenya is the third country affected by the DRC outbreak, which has crossed 8,000 cases.
