Harmanpreet To Mandhana: Inside India’s Captaincy Change

Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the India women’s cricket team across all formats, ending a tenure that began in 2012. She announced the decision in an emotional post after a BCCI review meeting in Guwahati.
Pressure on her captaincy had grown after India’s early exit from the Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year, though the team bounced back to win the Women’s Asia Cup and the Asian Games gold. Reports say she was offered the ODI captaincy but chose to give up both roles.
Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, 29, is the frontrunner to take over full-time. She has been Harmanpreet’s deputy for years, captained India in 18 T20Is and four ODIs with 15 wins, and has repeatedly said she is ready for the role.
The BCCI is understood to want to build the team around Mandhana for the next World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics. A formal announcement is expected when selectors pick the squad for the Zimbabwe series, with T20Is in Raipur from October 16 and ODIs in Baroda from October 23.
