Explained: India’s Rs 1.86 Lakh Crore Green Energy Corridor

India has cleared a Rs 1.86 lakh crore green energy plan. Here is what it means. The Green Energy Corridor Phase-III will move renewable power across India.
It will build 51,126 circuit km of transmission lines. It will add 2,28,903 MVA of substation capacity. About Rs 1.36 lakh crore goes to intra-state transmission.
Another Rs 50,000 crore funds 50 GWh of battery storage. Batteries matter because solar power stops at night. Stored energy can fill those gaps and handle peak demand.
The plan also includes Rs 54,082 crore in central support. That will help keep power costs lower for consumers. The goal is to evacuate up to 135 GW of renewable energy.
The scheme will finish by FY 2032-33. It supports India’s target of 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030. Current non-fossil capacity stands at 304 GW. States like Rajasthan and Gujarat will benefit first.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the grid needs a different design as renewable share rises. Solar is available in the day but not at night. Wind varies across day and seasons. The corridor will connect generation centres with demand centres. Greenfield projects will go through competitive bidding.
