Explained: what Green Energy Corridor Phase-III means for you

The Cabinet’s approval of Green Energy Corridor Phase-III is one of the largest power infrastructure decisions of the year. Here is what it actually means.
The problem it solves: India is adding solar and wind capacity faster than the grid can carry it. Renewable plants sit in deserts and coastlines while demand is in cities. Without transmission lines, clean power gets wasted.
What GEC-III does: it builds intra-state transmission networks to evacuate up to 135 GW of renewable energy, plus 50 GWh of battery storage to handle solar’s stop-start nature. The total outlay is Rs 1,86,405 crore, with Rs 54,082 crore in central support.
What it means for you: the central assistance is designed to offset transmission charges, keeping electricity bills from rising as the grid expands. The government targets completion by FY 2032-33.
Why it matters now: India has set a target of 900 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2035. Without corridors to move that power, the target stays on paper. This scheme is the plumbing behind the headline numbers.
