Google’s SynthID Detector explained: how to spot AI-made media

Google has opened its SynthID Detector to everyone. The tool lets users check whether an image, video or audio file carries a hidden AI watermark.

SynthID is a digital watermark Google introduced in 2023. It embeds an invisible signal into media made by AI tools. The watermark survives normal editing and sharing.

To use the detector, users upload a file to the SynthID website. The site checks for the watermark and reports what it finds. It works with images, video and audio.

The tool can identify media from Google’s models and partners OpenAI, Nvidia and Kakao. Apple plans to support the standard later. It cannot detect AI content from other tools.

Google said its checks handle about one million verification requests each day. Finding no watermark does not prove a file is real, experts said. It remains a verification aid, not a universal test. Google said it has watermarked more than 180 billion images and videos since 2023. OpenAI maintains its own checker. Microsoft and Meta run separate watermark standards.
