G7 oil release, explained: why 100 million barrels matters

The G7 has agreed to release 100 million barrels of oil from emergency reserves. Here is why the decision matters.
Leaders met by video conference on October 2 under France’s G7 presidency. They agreed on a coordinated release through the International Energy Agency, spread over four months.
A ‘substantial’ amount of diesel will go first, within 20 days. Diesel prices hit record highs in the United States, with AAA reporting a national average of 6.37 dollars per gallon.
The move followed pressure from US President Donald Trump. He had floated a possible ban on American diesel exports, which would have squeezed European supply.
G7 leaders also agreed not to impose export restrictions on each other. That avoids a spiral of retaliatory bans.
The release builds on a March 2026 pledge of 400 million barrels. Washington says Europe has been slow to deliver its promised share.
For India, the release could ease the crude prices that have pushed up inflation and strengthened the case for an RBI rate hike.
The IEA will report on implementation within 20 days. The real test is whether the barrels actually reach the market.
