What We Know About flydubai Flight FZ1073

On September 30, flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a mid-air emergency. Here is what we know so far.
Co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami, a 29-year-old Omani national, allegedly attacked the Indian captain, Smit Machchhar, with a crash axe. Passengers and crew overpowered him, and a reserve pilot diverted the jet to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia.
More than 170 people were on board. The UAE’s prosecutor general called it an attempted terrorist attack.
Israeli officials say the co-pilot appears to have planned the attack before joining flydubai and may have intended to target Ben Gurion Airport. He had flown the Tel Aviv route earlier this year and studied in Melbourne about a decade ago.
President Trump blamed Iran on October 5, but Vice President Vance said the evidence is inconclusive. Investigations in the UAE, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Australia continue.
Aviation experts say cockpit attacks are extremely rare, which is why this case has drawn global attention. Cockpit doors are reinforced, but crew members have access.
The investigation will examine the co-pilot’s background, motives and mental health. Airlines may face new questions about crew screening procedures.
